Award-winning jeweler Ruth Morlocke is featuring a new collection of jewelry called "ocean memories" at her orchid scented gallery, Different Facets, in Chagrin Falls.

The inspiration for her collection of gold, diamond and black Tahitian pearl hand-sculptured rings, pendants, bracelets, pin sand neclaces comes from the mystery and romance of the ocean, Ms. Morlocke said.

She has created abstract textured pieces symbolizing golden sand, beach pebbles , the roll of the waves, and the glint of sunlight on the water.

"The are very sculptural pieces carved in wax. There is a motion to them," said Ms. Morlocke, who recently returned from her first snorkeling trip near the Flordia Keys. "The reffs, fish, coral were breathtaking. You could just get lost in the water."

Her jewelry evokes memories of another era for some. One client told her that the custom design piece she was createing for her took her back to a memory of a beach in Georgia.

Ms. Morlocke and her husband, Ben, create the jewelry - from design to stone setting in their studio and gallery at 31 S. Franklin St., just one block from Triangle Park.

In her second year of business, Ms. Morlocke was invited to display her jewelry at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., in 2000. Out of 17 artists from the United States and Canada invited for the six month show, Ms. Morlocke was the only jeweler.

Celebrities have worn her designs, and she has won national jewelry competitions, displayed her work in museums and has been featured on television in South America.

Ms. Morlocke worked for 16 years carving and casting for Jewels by IMG. When the owner retired three years ago, she opened her studio and gallery where she displays fantastic orchids. She is an accredited American Orchid Society judge. She and her husband grow and hybridize orchids.

Visit Different Facets to view Ms. Morlocke's new collection or have her custom design a jewelry piece - that will take you back to your own special beach.
